Small Fate Chips Version 2

Small Fate Chips

Small fate chips remain unchanged except for the limit of 5. You get small fate chips through RPAs, posting on the forums on time before the game, and through some other sources such as Luck o' the Irish.

You can discard a lower value chip to claim a higher value one if you happen to be at capacity.

Copper, Silver, and Gold Chips

These new fate chips can be gained in the same way that small fate chips can. Anytime a small fate chip is acquired, a player can choose to instead gain an appropriate copper, silver, or gold chip.

These chips have no limit and differ greatly from normal fate chips. There are a few primary uses for these chips — extra luck when finding items and declaring NPCs as minor allies.

When finding items, there must be at least a decent excuse. For example, you could say that the outlaw you just shot up had a few .45 rounds on him, or maybe you just found a box of 7.62 ammo but wanted it to be 5.56 instead. If the posse finds a stash of loot, they could pool their chips to say that there was X item in the stash (or they could get items separately).

When gaining allies, care should be taken so as not to override the Friends in High Places edge. Most "allies" gained with these chips won't take huge risks for you, but will at least recognize you as non-hostile and may offer help in the form of information, some ammo, or a good deal on gear the posse needs. They most likely won't follow the posse out on a dangerous adventure, though.

Finally, these chips can also be used for anything the GM will allow. They should never be able to replicate the effects of standard fate chips, but a variety of effects are possible.

With a Copper chip, you can…

  • Find an item worth about $20 (half that for weapons, double that for purely cosmetic items).
  • Declare one random NPC to be non-hostile. For example, a bartender might not like you but he somehow knows that you aren't out to kill him or hurt his friends.

With a Silver chip, you can…

  • Find an item worth about $100 (half that for weapons, double that for purely cosmetic items).
  • Declare one random NPC to be a minor acquaintance. For example, a bartender might have heard about you from a friend and cut you a good deal or be more likely to share information.

With a Gold chip, you can…

  • Find an item worth about $500 (half that for weapons, double that for purely cosmetic items).
  • Declare one random NPC to be a friend. For example, a bartender might know you because you shot up some outlaws that were tearing up his bar a while back.

The GM has final say on what works and what doesn't, but should generally be pretty lenient. If a posse member wants rope and there is an old barn nearby, the GM really has no reason to deny that. On the other hand, getting a flamethrower from said barn might not be quite so feasible, even if one or more members of the posse have the chips for it.
